Short answer: to get more calls from Google Maps, your Google Business Profile needs the right primary category, a complete list of services, accurate hours, fresh photos, regular updates, and a steady flow of recent reviews that you reply to. Most New Jersey profiles we audit are missing at least three of these.
Use this checklist to optimise your own profile, or to check the work of whoever manages it for you.
Why does your Google Business Profile matter so much for leads?
For “near me” and “[service] in [town]” searches, the Map Pack usually appears above the regular results, and your profile is what people see first. They can call, request directions or visit your website straight from it, often without scrolling further.
Reviews are a big part of that first impression. BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found that 74% of consumers look for reviews written in the last three months, and 31% will only use a business rated 4.5 stars or higher.
Step 1: Are your business basics correct?
- Business name – exactly as it appears on your signage and paperwork. Adding keywords or towns to the name breaks Google’s guidelines and can get a profile suspended.
- Address or service area – show your address if customers visit you; otherwise hide it and list the towns you serve.
- Phone number and website – identical to what is on your website and every directory listing.
- Hours – including holiday hours, so Google never shows you as closed by mistake.
Step 2: Have you chosen the right categories?
Your primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which searches you appear for. Pick the one that best describes your main service, then add a few secondary categories for other genuine services. Check which categories the top three competitors in your town use for ideas.
Step 3: Are your services and description complete?
- Add every service you offer, each with a short, plain-English description.
- Write a business description that says what you do, where you do it and why customers choose you, without stuffing keywords.
- Use the Products section to showcase packages or popular services with a photo and a link.
Step 4: Are you adding photos and updates regularly?
Profiles that look active build trust. Aim for:
- Real photos of your team, premises, vehicles and finished work, added every month.
- A Google post every week: a recent project, a tip, an offer or a new blog article with a “Learn more” button.
- Answers to the common questions customers ask, added as Q&A or covered in your description and posts.
Step 5: Do you have a review routine?
- Ask every happy customer for a review within a day or two of finishing the job.
- Send your direct review link by text or email so it takes one tap.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and within a couple of days.
- Never buy reviews, offer incentives for them, or only ask customers you expect to be positive. These break Google’s policies.
Step 6: Is your website backing up your profile?
Google cross-checks your profile against your website. Make sure your site has the same name, address and phone number, a clear page for each main service, a page for each area you serve and local business schema. We explain how this fits together in local SEO services in New Jersey and how to get into the Map Pack.
Step 7: Are you tracking calls and clicks?
Check the Performance section of your profile every month for calls, website clicks and direction requests. On your website, track calls, forms, WhatsApp messages and bookings in Google Analytics, so you know which searches turn into real enquiries.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take for profile changes to improve rankings?
In our experience, Google Business Profile improvements usually show movement within 4–12 weeks. It is a range, not a guarantee, and depends on competition in your area.
Can I add keywords to my business name to rank higher?
No. It breaks Google’s guidelines and is one of the most common reasons profiles get suspended.
How often should I post on my Google Business Profile?
Once a week is a good rhythm. Consistency matters more than volume.
Should I hire someone to manage my profile?
If you do not have time for weekly posts, monthly photos and review replies, a managed service keeps it consistent. Read how to choose an SEO company in New Jersey before you hire.
