Short answer: you need a website redesign when your site no longer brings in enquiries, looks dated next to competitors, is slow or awkward on a phone, or cannot be updated without calling a developer. A good redesign keeps what already ranks on Google, fixes what puts visitors off, and makes it easy for people to call, message or book.
This checklist is what we walk New Jersey business owners through before we touch a single page. It will help you brief any agency, compare quotes fairly and avoid the most common (and expensive) redesign mistakes.
What do website redesign services actually include?
A proper redesign is more than a new colour scheme. It usually covers:
- Discovery – what the site needs to achieve, who your buyers are and which pages already bring in traffic.
- Structure – a clearer menu, service pages for each thing you sell and location pages for the areas you serve.
- Design – a modern, on-brand layout that works first on mobile.
- Content – rewritten pages that answer buyers’ questions in plain English.
- Build – on WordPress, Wix, Shopify or Squarespace, depending on how you want to manage it.
- SEO migration – keeping your rankings safe with redirects, titles and a fresh sitemap.
- Tracking – calls, forms, WhatsApp messages and bookings measured from day one.
Our WordPress, Wix and Shopify pages explain how each platform fits different businesses.
How do you know it is time to redesign your website?
Look for these signals. Two or more usually means a redesign will pay for itself faster than patching the old site:
- Enquiries have dropped even though your business has not changed.
- The site is hard to use on a phone, or text is tiny and buttons are cramped.
- Pages take more than a few seconds to load.
- You are embarrassed to send the link to a new client.
- Competitors look more established online than you do.
- You cannot add a service, page or photo without paying someone.
- Nobody can tell you how many leads the site produces each month.
We go through these in more detail in 7 signs your website needs a redesign.
What should you prepare before a redesign starts?
The best projects start with a short, honest brief. Before your first call, gather:
- Your top three services, in order of what you most want to sell.
- The towns or regions you want work from.
- Two or three competitor or “dream” websites, and what you like about each.
- Logo files, brand colours, real photos of your team and your work.
- Access to your domain, hosting, Google Search Console and Google Analytics.
- Reviews and testimonials you are happy to show.
The more of this you have ready, the faster the agency can show you a design you actually like.
How do you protect your Google rankings during a redesign?
This is where many redesigns quietly lose leads. When page addresses change, Google can treat the new pages as brand new and the old ones as broken, unless the move is handled properly. Ask your agency to:
- List every page that currently gets traffic or ranks, before anything is changed.
- Set up permanent (301) redirects from every old address to its closest new page.
- Carry over or improve page titles, descriptions and headings.
- Submit a fresh XML sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools on launch day.
- Check for broken links and 404 errors in the first two weeks after launch.
If an agency cannot explain its redirect plan, that is a warning sign. Our guide to why a website isn’t showing up on Google covers what can go wrong.
How long does a website redesign take?
It depends on the number of pages, how much content needs writing and how quickly feedback comes back. Small brochure sites move fastest; e-commerce stores and sites with many service or location pages take longer. For realistic ranges, see how long it takes to build a business website.
One thing that speeds every project up: seeing the design early. At Code Craft Innovations we share a design preview before any large payment, so you approve the look and feel before the full build begins.
Should you redesign on WordPress, Wix or Shopify?
Choose the platform around how you will run the site after launch:
- WordPress suits businesses that want full flexibility, lots of content and room to grow.
- Wix Studio suits owners who want to make their own edits easily without plugins to maintain.
- Shopify suits businesses whose main goal is selling products online.

Frequently asked questions
Will a redesign hurt my SEO?
Not if redirects, titles and the sitemap are handled properly. Done well, a redesign often improves rankings because the site becomes faster, clearer and easier for Google to understand.
Can you redesign my site without changing the platform?
Yes. Many redesigns keep the same platform and domain and focus on structure, design, content and speed.
Do I need new content as well as a new design?
Usually, yes. A new layout with old copy rarely changes results. Clear service pages with answers to buyers’ questions are what turn visitors into enquiries.
How much does a website redesign cost?
It depends on the number of pages, features and content needed. We review your current site first and send a clear quote, usually within one business day.
