How Much Does a Logo Cost? Logo Design Prices and Process for NJ Businesses

Logo design cost and process: guide by Code Craft Innovations

A logo can cost anything from nothing to several thousand dollars. The price depends on who designs it and how much thinking, testing and ownership comes with it. A logo maker or template costs little but gives you a mark other businesses may share. Design contests on 99designs cost $249 to $1,050 for a package. A designer or agency quotes for custom work: real concepts, testing at every size, a full set of files and the copyright in writing. This guide explains what each option gets you, what a proper logo process looks like, and what to check before you pay for a logo in New Jersey.

How much does a logo cost?

There are four common routes, and they buy very different things:

Route Typical cost What you get Watch out for
Logo maker or template Free to low cost A quick mark built from stock icons and fonts Others can use the same elements; it may not be registrable as your trademark
Design contest $249 to $1,050 on 99designs Many concepts from different designers; you pick a winner Limited strategy or follow-up work; check the file set you’ll receive
Freelance designer Quoted per project One designer’s concepts and revisions Quality and files vary widely; get ownership in writing
Design studio or agency Quoted per project Research, several real concepts, testing, a complete file set and usage rules Make sure the quote lists every deliverable

99designs lists its logo contest packages at $249 (Bronze), $399 (Silver), $799 (Gold) and $1,050 (Platinum), each with a money-back guarantee and full copyright ownership (99designs pricing, checked October 26, 2026). Freelancers and studios price by scope, so compare what’s included, not just the total.

What should a logo design package include?

Whatever you pay, ask for these in writing:

  • Genuinely different concepts: two or three distinct ideas, not small variations of one.
  • Revisions: how many rounds are included on the chosen concept.
  • Testing at real sizes: the logo should still read as a tiny browser icon, on a phone screen, on a van and on a sign.
  • Versions: full color, one color, reversed (white on dark), and a stacked or horizontal layout.
  • Vector master files: AI, SVG, EPS and PDF, plus PNG exports for everyday use. Vector files scale to any size without blurring.
  • A short usage guide: colors, clear space, minimum size and what not to do.
  • Copyright transfer: written confirmation that the rights pass to your business (more on this below).

Our logo design service is built around this list: three concept routes, testing at every size, more than 15 file formats and copyright transferred to you.

What does the logo design process look like?

  1. Brief: your business, customers, competitors and where the logo will be used most (website, vehicles, signs, social media).
  2. Concepts: several distinct creative routes, each with the thinking behind it.
  3. Refinement: the chosen route is developed, with color and typography choices tested.
  4. Testing: the mark is checked at small and large sizes, in one color and on real mock-ups.
  5. Delivery: organized, clearly named files and a usage guide.
  6. Roll-out: optional extras such as business cards, an email signature and social profile images.

If your logo is part of a wider refresh, it’s worth planning the website at the same time; our guide on how much a website costs in New Jersey covers that budget.

Why do logo prices vary so much?

Three things drive the difference. The first is time spent on thinking: research and several real concepts take far longer than adjusting a template. The second is what you can do with the result: a custom mark can be yours alone, while template elements are shared. The third is the deliverables: a single PNG and a complete set of vector files with usage rules aren’t the same product.

A cheap logo isn’t always a bad choice. For a side project or a test idea, a simple mark may be enough. For a business that will put its name on vehicles, uniforms, signs and a website for years, redoing it later usually costs more than doing it properly once.

Who owns the logo after it’s designed?

Don’t assume you do. Under US copyright law, a transfer of copyright ownership isn’t valid unless it’s in writing and signed by the owner of the rights (17 U.S.C. §204(a), U.S. Copyright Office). Paying an invoice isn’t enough on its own. Ask your designer for a signed transfer or a contract clause that assigns the copyright to your business once you’ve paid.

If you use a logo maker or a template, read its license. Stock icons and templates are shared with other users, and some licenses don’t allow them in a trademark.

If the name and logo are central to your business, it’s worth considering. Federal registration gives you a legal presumption that you own the mark, the right to sue in federal court, and the right to use the ® symbol, which is only for registered marks (USPTO, why register your trademark).

The USPTO’s base application fee is $350 per class of goods or services. It adds $100 per class when an application is missing required information, and $200 per class when you describe your goods or services in the free-form text box instead of choosing from the ID Manual (USPTO fee schedule, checked October 26, 2026). A trademark attorney can tell you which classes you need and whether your mark is likely to be approved; we design logos, we don’t give legal advice.

How do I brief a logo designer?

  • What your business does, for whom, and what makes it different.
  • Three words you want people to feel when they see the logo.
  • Logos you like and dislike (from any industry), and why.
  • Where the logo will appear most often.
  • Any colors or symbols you must keep or must avoid.
  • Your deadline and budget range.

A clear brief saves revision rounds and gets you better concepts in the first presentation.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a small business pay for a logo?

It depends on how long you’ll use it and where. Design contests on 99designs run from $249 to $1,050; designers and studios quote per project. Compare what’s included: concepts, revisions, vector files, a usage guide and a written copyright transfer.

How long does logo design take?

It depends on the number of concepts and revision rounds, and on how quickly you give feedback. Ask for a timeline with dates for concepts, revisions and final files before you start.

What file formats should I get for my logo?

Vector master files (AI, SVG, EPS and PDF) for printing and signs, and PNG files with transparent backgrounds for websites, documents and social media.

Can I use a free logo maker for my business?

You can, especially for a test idea. Check the license first: logos built from shared icons may not be yours alone and may not be registrable as a trademark.

Do I need a new website when I change my logo?

Not always. A new logo can be added to your current site, but a full rebrand is a good moment to review whether the website still brings in enquiries.
